Proud Member of
Larry
a.k.a. The Godfather
Larry
Most tours begin somewhere, but every Federal City Tour begins with someone: Larry Clark... Over the years, Larry has built a solid reputation for fun, engaging and historically accurate tours. Now in his third decade of sharing his passion, Larry has entertained well over 100,000 guests with his highly acclaimed storytelling tours of DC, as well as the surrounding DMV. His guiding “fingerprints” are all over the city: Just Google “Larry Clark – Washington DC tour guide” to see. That’s why we call him The Godfather! A former TV reporter, an award-winning writer & producer, Larry also interviewed President Carter and Millard Fuller for a local PBS documentary he produced on Habitat for Humanity. He has also appeared on the History Channel program, Are We There, Yet? – America On Vacation.
Q: What inspires you?
A: History inspires me - The Good, The Bad & The Ugly. Balancing the true nature of our past & learning something new to share with my guests. It's a daily reminder of what a great country we live in, warts & all!
Q: What is your “Golden Nugget” of advice?
A: Calvin Coolidge said it best: “Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful people with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. The slogan Press On! has solved and always will solve the problems of the human race.”
Q: What is your favorite place to take people in DC & why?
A: Since half the team chose Arlington National Cemetery, I’ll say Ford’s Theatre. Lincoln was president for a little more than 1500 days. The trajectory of our history was altered “That Night” at Ford’s Theatre. It’s an intensely dramatic & complex story I am privileged to share with my guests!
Bob
a.k.a. T-Bone
Bob
Originally from Asheville, NC, Bob is the only real musician in our band! After graduating from Mars Hill University with a degree in Business Administration, he “cut his teeth” on tourism at the prestigious Biltmore Estate. The invaluable lessons learned from this national treasure truly prepared him for broadening his historical horizons in Washington, DC! Bob’s great passion for travel also influences his love of history and his devotion to sharing that knowledge, which has mesmerized guests for more than a decade and a half!
Q: What inspires you?
A: Travel – Learning from the rich history, culture and incredible scenic beauty all over the world, which is both humbling & inspiring! My wife, Rachel & I love picking out new places to explore!
Q: What is your favorite ‘90s jam?
A: Narrowing it to one is really tough. If forced to pick just one (& as a child of the ‘90s), it would have to be Smells Like Teen Spirit. This iconic song kinda got me into music. I still play several instruments & love to perform, even if it’s just for fun!
Q: Favorite place to take people in DC?
A: My favorite place to take people to in DC is Arlington National Cemetery. It’s such an amazing place filled with so much history – from our nation’s founding, up until this morning – trekking through ANC is an incredible honor!
John
a.k.a. Red
John
John has honed his skills with 20+ years as an educator and historian, having completed three master’s programs in Military History, American History, and Civil War Studies. Educated at historic Howard University, University of the District of Columbia, and the American Military University, John’s resume includes 10 years of classroom experience, works for The National Parks Service and has been a guide par excellence for almost 20 years.
Q: What inspires you?
A: My firm belief that hearts & minds can be changed through a true understanding of our incredible history is what inspires me & hopefully, will inspire others!
Q: What’s the most interesting thing about you that we wouldn’t learn from your resume?
A: I love to dress in period attire in order to teach the principles of leadership and teamwork using history as the vehicle. From a USCT soldier to the Tuskegee Airmen, my history is truly American history!
Q: What is your favorite place to take people in DC & why?
A: Cedar Hill – Frederick Douglass’ home. Douglass was courageous, brave, dynamic, intelligent, and incredibly authentic in one of the more “challenging periods” in our history. I think his contributions are often overlooked & his home reveals his spirit & character. I love to show people in this place!
Erica
a.k.a. Passport
Erica
A proud “Home Grown” native of DC & self-proclaimed travel junkie, Erica is into her second decade of guiding, beginning shortly after graduating from the University of Mary Washington with a degree in Historic Preservation. Erica took a detour from tourism and tried the “desk job lifestyle” for a while. This experience led to her eager return to guiding – this time, more invigorated and revitalized than ever!
Q: What inspires you?
A: I get inspired by visiting exciting places with good, positive energy. Because travel inspires me so much, I enjoy making positive memories for my guests who travel to DC!
Q: One person’s luxury is another person’s necessity . . . What are your luxurious necessities?
A: My luxurious necessity is definitely my horse Monty. He’s one part pet, one part workout partner, and all parts wonderful! Nothing brightens my day more than pony nickers & showing people my city!
Q: What is your favorite place to take people in DC & why?
A: My favorite place to take people in Washington DC is probably the National Mall and all the Memorials. Each so unique, with so much history, architectural elegance & culture to experience – this is where real DC memories are made!
Dan
a.k.a. The Assassin
Dan
Another life-long resident of the DC area. After graduating from nearby University of Maryland with a degree in US History, Dan’s move toward guiding was inevitable: He first started his own distributing company, where, oddly enough, his customers were many of the same places we visit on tour today – the gift shops and bookstores at the National memorials & museums, the White House Historical Society, US Capitol Historical Society, among others. Becoming a guide was, clearly, an easy transition!
Q: What inspires you?
A: Exploring and admiring the city’s incredible history, monuments, memorials, and world-class architecture.
Q: You buy a lottery ticket & win $10 million. What would you do?
A: Because I love my job, I would keep working, (probably!) but obviously, my “travel budget” just got a LOT friendlier!
Q: What is your favorite place to take people in DC & why?
A: Easy – Arlington National Cemetery . . . The silent clash of serene beauty and emotional impact of ultimate sacrifice mixing with the entire expanse of our history – there is no other place like it in the United States – I am grateful & humbled every time I’m there!
